What Is the Real Reason the Presidential Race Is A

May 17th, 2012

The general election campaign is underway and the president could be in for the fight of his life. As expected Windows 7 serial key, Mitt Romney won all five GOP primaries Tuesday, and his remarks sure sounded like an energetic nomination speech.

“A better America begins tonight,” Romney told supporters in Manchester, New Hampshire.

Dare I say it? Could it be? Romney sounded presidential.

To all of the thousands of good and decent Americans I’ve met who want nothing more than a better chance, a fighting chance — to all of you, I have a simple message: Hold on a little longer. A better America begins tonight.

Romney’s five state sweep was quite predictable (Connecticut, Rhode Island, Delaware Windows 7 Key, Pennsylvania and New York) but the closeness of the race already between President Obama and Mr. Romney does raise eyebrows.

Yes I concede this much.

General election contests tighten for the most part, but this fast? Consistent polls have shown this race neck and neck in just the last few days. What’s even more shocking is Romney is battling an uphill fight, allegedly doing such a “good” job of “alienating women and Hispanic voters,” that the November election was supposed to be “shaping up as a cakewalk for Obama.” But Romney is still running close with Obama.

I ask you for a rationale for why the race is so tight?

For months after all, the Republican party was strongly divided on Romney. Remember “anybody but Romney?” Let’s see. He was a flip-flopper and even called a liar, a fake conservative — and that’s from his own GOP rivals. Romney was called tone deaf, the multi-millionaire that looked down at the rest of us. The guy “who enjoyed firing incompetent people,” the guy who said “he isn’t worried about poor people.” Hey, did I mention his wife owned two Cadillacs? However, that is all a thing of the past. (Who are we kidding here? That is until Team Obama sinks its teeth in.)

Is it the economy that is hurting Obama, which cuts both ways for the incumbent president? Almost a glass is half-full, half-empty situation. Are you better off than you were four years ago? Is it the European debt crisis? There is no doubt the slow economic recovery is hurting Obama politically Windows 7 product key free, and Romney has locked on an issue that resonates with the American People. Look at Romney’s comments from Tuesday night: Four years ago Barack Obama dazzled us in front of Greek columns with sweeping promises of hope and change. But after we came down to earth … what do we have to show for three and a half years of President Obama?

It’s still all about the economy — and we’re not stupid.

OK, I’ll ask another question. Is it the price of gasoline at the pump that is hurting Obama? The president did initially veto the Keystone pipeline “that would have brought more Canadian oil and gas to the U.S.”

In polling, Obama rates far better than Congress with the public, and the same surveys show he’s more likable than Romney, but yet, Obama is in the fight of his life. I ask you: why?

Is it the partisan Congress hurting Obama?

And while I’m raising these issues, it also seems like the daring raid in Pakistan by U.S. commandos that killed Osama bin Laden is completely a thing of the past. Almost like it didn’t even happen on Obama’s watch.

I ask you. Are there any other factors for why Obama finds himself in a neck and neck battle with Mitt Romney? We discussed this issue on RNN-TV, the “Richard French Live Show.” You can take a look here. Democrats will try to paint Romney as an extreme conservative. It may work, it may not, but let this serve as a warning: don’t sleep on Romney.

Exclusive Sanctions block Syria’s vital grain tra

May 17th, 2012

LONDON (Reuters) – Syria is finding it increasingly hard to buy grain on international markets because sanctions have blocked its access to trade finance, while growing numbers of its citizens are struggling to obtain food after more than a year of conflict.

The European Union, the United States and other Western countries have imposed sanctions on President Bashar al-Assad’s government in response to his bloody crackdown on a revolt that has cost more than 10,000 lives.

The measures, which include asset freezes and financing restrictions, have hurt Syria’s vital commercial grain trade.

Syria relies on food imports for almost half of its total needs, with wheat used for food replica watches, while maize and barley are used mainly for animal feed.

“Syria has deep problems at the moment finding companies willing to offer grain such as barley. You can’t open a letter of credit and the risks associated with any deal seem to be rising all the time,” one trade source said.

“The Commercial Bank of Syria (the country’s largest state-owned bank) is not accepted anymore and there are currency related difficulties, so they are going to find it hard to meet their grain needs.”

A Syrian state agency issued an international tender last week to buy 150,000 metric tonnes (165,347 tons) of feed barley. Last year it tendered to buy 500,000 tonnes of feed barley but failed to do so.

“Due to the problems they are facing, they are now having to tender for smaller parcel sizes,” the source said.

Last month the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organisation forecast that Syria’s cereal import needs in the marketing year 2011/12 would rise to 4 million tonnes, 1 million tonnes higher than the previous year.

Separately, the International Grains Council has forecast Syria will need to import 900,000 tonnes of wheat in 2011/12, up from 500,000 tonnes in 2010/11.

“Syria is facing trade problems and based on anecdotal reports what seems to be happening now is that companies are pulling out of the country due to the security and operating risks replica watches, so that is a challenge for the government in terms of imports,” Henry Wilkinson, head of intelligence and analysis at the Risk Advisory Group, said.

“In Syria bread is subsidized, so controlling bread prices will be an important strategy for the government.”

HUMANITARIAN AID

A confidential United Nations aid document obtained by Reuters showed at least 1 million Syrians need humanitarian aid.

“Access to food has become an increasing issue in Syria,” the U.N. aid document said.

“Over the past 12 months, there have been sharp increases in food prices in many locations, unemployment has risen, the Syrian pound has depreciated in value; and many of those who have relocated no longer have access to subsidized food.”

In Damascus residents agree. They say prices have more than doubled — sugar replica watches, rice, meat, grocery and restaurants bills have all gone up. Some people said they were stocking up with supplies that would last them at least a month.

Syria has not published economic figures for a year, making it hard to assess accurately the impact of the unrest and sanctions. Louay Hussein, an opposition figure, estimated unemployment as high as 80 percent. “There is no work, no business, and nothing is working,” he told Reuters in Damascus.

“Now in Syria people are only buying the basics. And some people do not have money any more to buy the basics and are living on support from others.”

While western sanctions are not meant to target food imports, the complexity of trade, including extensive due diligence, is expected to weigh on deals. Legal specialists say for companies operating in the EU, dealing with Syrian state entities involved in food or receiving payments over a certain amount require authorization from national authorities.

“No big player would want to burn their fingers on Syria at the moment and when it comes to selling on your own name or account, forget it – there are just too many hurdles,” another trade source said.

In contrast, Iran, Syria’s main ally in the Middle East, has managed to purchase over 2 million tonnes of milling wheat in recent weeks, after the Islamic Republic managed to sidestep Western sanctions using alternative financing routes.

Trade sources said the possibility of merchant vessels being stopped by authorities looking for weapons bound for either Assad or the rebels was another disincentive.

Last week Lebanese authorities seized a consignment of weapons on board a container ship heading to the Lebanese port of Tripoli. The weapons could have been transported by land from Tripoli to Syrian rebels.

“The trade fears more monitoring of merchant vessels in the Mediterranean by authorities looking for weapons bound for Syria, which is going to create extra problems and raise … costs,” another trade source said.

RISING FOOD PRICES

With the violence continuing despite a ceasefire negotiated last month, The World Food Programme said the number of people to whom it was supplying aid in Syria was expected to rise to half a million in coming weeks from the 250,000 assisted during April.

“Informal observations and field monitoring have shown that vulnerability to food insecurity has increased dramatically in areas affected by the unrest,” WFP spokeswoman Abeer Etefa said.

“Overall poverty levels are also increasing, access to basic supplies and services is deteriorating; since May 2011, prices of most items, notably food and fuel, have risen by approximately 50 percent and the Syrian pound has devalued by approximately 50 percent against international currencies.”

Trade sources said Syria may need to source its imports via neighboring countries such as Jordan and Lebanon and smuggle it in using trucks and railcars.

“The only way it looks like they will meet some of their needs in the short term is by smuggling across the borders,” a trade source said. “They may also start to use middle men in places like China and Russia.”

Trade sources added Iran, despite facing sanctions itself from the West, was expected to be asked to assist with Syria’s grain imports. Such consignments could be transported via Iraq or bought on behalf of Syria using networks set up by Iran.

Iran signed a free trade agreement with Syria last week, Iran’s state-run Press TV said on its website.

“Iran has managed to get round the trade finance restrictions and is importing grain, and we should see Syria using the Iranians for grain but that will take time,” another trade source said. “In the meantime, Assad is in the firing line with the West and needs to find solutions fast.”

Mother’s Day Tears and Triumphs

May 17th, 2012

For most women, Mother’s Day is a time to honor and celebrate motherhood. The family gathers for brunch or dinner and Mom is treated to some rest, relaxation and a little extra loving care. For countless other women, it also marks a day of grieving and loss.

For mothers whose sons or daughters are locked behind bars for petty drug offenses, it is a day filled with frustration and emptiness. I have experienced many mother’s days like this over the past decades, when my older son was incarcerated for non-violent drug offenses. At those times I wasn’t clear where I belonged: visiting one son behind bars, or with the rest of my family coping with a heart torn in two. This year I reflect on a trail of tears and triumphs, as both of my sons are alive and in recovery.

When we look at history, this celebration is also one of maternal strength and action. Mother’s Day was started in North America as a response to the carnage and deaths from the Civil War. Mothers came together to protest the futility of their sons killing the sons of other mothers. In the 1930’s Tattoo Kits Supplies, a group of mothers were instrumental in ending alcohol prohibition in the United States because of the corruption, gangland violence and death that it caused.

Today, mothers are leading the charge to end the disastrous war on drugs and failed punitive prohibitionist policies that have wreaked such havoc on our families. Moms from across the nation are telling their stories in an effort to call attention to the tragic loss of lives and liberties caused by the drug war. Mothers are joining forces with cops, students and healthcare professionals to demand an end to these silent but deadly battles that are waged against our own people, and particularly against communities of color and poverty.

Over the past 40 years Setting Tattoo Machine, the drug war has cost us deeply in terms of damaged or lost lives, wasted resources and erosion of basic human liberties. 2.3 million people are behind bars in America. We arrest over 750 Tattoo Gun Machines,000 people every year for nothing more than low-level marijuana possession. The United States has 5% of the world’s general population but 25% of the world’s prison population. The illegal drug trade caused by prohibition is killing our sons and daughters at alarming rates on both sides of the border. Young people are dying from overdoses at epidemic levels, yet many of these overdoses could have been reversed if their friends hadn’t been afraid to call 911 for fear of arrest.

My heart goes out to mothers whose children have been removed from their care in the name of the war on drugs; to women who must carry on as heads of households because their husbands are behind bars for petty drug offenses; and to mothers who will never get that precious phone call on mother’s day because their son or daughter died of an accidental drug overdose.

Mothers’ inherent and intrinsic right to nurture and protect their offspring has been compromised by criminal justice policies of ignorance and punitive aggression. \I invite other mothers to speak out for the sake of their children on this special occasion that marks the tears, joys, triumphs and sorrows of motherhood. We must reclaim our voices and declare our commitment to changing drug policies from arrest and mass incarceration to therapeutic, health-oriented and life affirming strategies.

Dance Photography — The Instagram Challenge

May 17th, 2012

I went to see a DanceNOW showcase of emerging artists this month held at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. I was not going to photograph the showcase — just see some new work and meet some new people. But whenever I watch dance Homemade Tattoo Guns, I see pictures, and I wanted to shoot.

I just started playing with Instagram, and I thought it would be a fun challenge making some dance photographs with the app. Shooting with Instagram on the iPhone is far from an ideal way to capture dance. Especially the way I like to capture it. I like to use two cameras with both wide lens and long lens at the same time. I like having the freedom to move around the theater if need be. With my digital cameras I can shoot hundreds of images very quickly without reloading and without any delay on the trigger or delay in the capture processing. I can keep shooting and make choices later in the editing room.

From the seat I was in at the showcase, there was a host of challenges I would face. So I decided I’d make it a fun game for myself.

The challenges:
Limited movement for camera location
Strong graphic elements in background (trim on the wall and distinct architecture of the ceiling)
Slow shutter speed
Delayed shutter trigger
Backlit from only one light source and a left-side window
I had never seen these works before (although I’m used to that)
Square frame format (I’m used to the rectangle format of the 35mm)

Rules of the game:
Only allowed to upload 1 image per dance
The image must give a feel for the choreographer’s work

Once I captured and uploaded one image, I couldn’t shoot any more of the same dance. So I was gambling on every piece wondering, “If I choose this picture, will I miss something really fantastic that I haven’t yet seen?” I wanted to capture a variety of shots, too, so I was hoping to capture something unique in each piece. There were two pieces where I took image after image and kept hitting delete instead of upload, thinking I could make a better shot or a more interesting moment was coming. I erased a few good shots and ended with NOTHING! So frustrating.

All in all Best Tattoo Machines, it was a fun game, and I’m looking forward to a chance to try it again. Did I win this round? You be the judge.

The World Has Gone to the Dogs

May 16th, 2012

One of the nicest parts of working here at the Beverly Hills’ AOL/Huffington Post office has been the bring-your-dog-to-work policy. It basically allows dogs to sleep at the feet of their people all day long with the understanding that everyone keeps their teeth to themselves and remembers where the fire hydrant is.

What I like about the policy is that it sets the tone for the office. You walk in here and, after being greeted by Beaugee the Yorkie-Poo or Diesel the Newfoundland, you totally get what we are about. Our canine co-workers are part of the office ambiance. The occasional woof reminds us that this isn’t a place for suit-wearing managers who need to fly first-class; it’s a place for scrappy, runaway ideas and the high energy it takes to make them happen.

Which is why a howl of protest spread across the office on Friday. It was announced that our building’s new landlord — a.k.a. Mr. Meanie — had determined that dogs would no longer be welcome as of June first. Let me just say, I wouldn’t want to be in Mr. Meanie’s Italian leather shoes when Dio the Yorkie (a teensy dog who clearly has never seen his reflection in a mirror) finds out. Dio usually works from home on Fridays, but you don’t mess with Dio.

Now, I’m not of a high-enough pay grade to know the reasons behind this biting decision, but my money is on something related to insurance or Mr. Meanie’s mother never letting him have a dog as a kid. But surely he has read the studies about how pets help us relax and keep us healthier?

Here’s hoping he reconsiders. And while my own scrappy Bichon-Poodle mix has only come to work with me on the rare occasion that she can be accompanied by her less-scrappy human sister, I will sorely miss Otis — the Huffington Post TV writer’s Boston Terrier — checking out my lunch (we do share on occasion) and Billy the Bichon swinging by to see if I have any biscuits that Otis didn’t already scarf down. Please say it isn’t so.

ReportFord requests meeting with Lincoln dealers

May 15th, 2012

With Mercury on the way to the morgue Tattoo Supplies, there are plenty of very nervous Lincoln dealers in the United States. Ford Motor Company is looking to calm those nerves a bit by inviting dealers to Dearborn, MI on October 4. Automotive News reports that The Blue Oval is going to show dealers its plans for its North American-only luxury arm.

Ford spokesman Christian Bokich tells AN that the event is all about the future of Lincoln, adding “It’s more about giving dealers a look how Ford will now work with Lincoln as an exclusive, luxury brand.” There is no word at this time concerning the content being covered, but we’re expecting Ford to show future product, along with how the automaker will further differentiate the four-pointed star from the Ford brand in the years to come. Bloomberg is also reporting that Lincoln dealers will be asked to upgrade their showrooms and work on improving customer service. There are currently 264 retail outlets that do not sell Ford product, and at this point many dealers don’t know if they will live on as stand-alone Lincoln dealers in the future.

One interesting byproduct that could result from the meeting will be the likely product leaks that are soon to follow. Among the future vehicles anticipated to be added to the Lincoln brand are a Focus-sized C-segment small car inspired by the Concept C from the 2009 Detroit Auto Show and a similarly proportioned crossover.

Officially OfficialGM reveals the 2011 Chevy Volt!

Everyone who has been waiting with bated breath for the past year and a half to see the production version of the Chevy Volt can now breathe a big sigh of relief. After some extremely unflattering press shots shots were accidentally released last week, people were extremely disappointed with what appeared to be little more than a Prius clone. Anyone who spends time photographing cars knows how hard it can be to make them look good and how easy it is to make them look really awful. Unfortunately Cheap Marc Jacobs Dresses, those shots that were unapproved and never supposed to be released anyway fell into the latter category.

The car that GM rolled out this morning as part of its centennial celebration in Detroit is a much more attractive machine that while different from the concept is still very attractive. Rather than the egg shape look we saw Replica Chloe Dresses, it’s actually much more like the car we saw in the Transformers 2 spy pics a few weeks back. The greenhouse is longer and the raked back windshield gives a very slick look. Perhaps the most controversial aspect of the design is the black trim around the side windows. The thick black border along the lower edge is meant to recall the transparent beltline of the concept. It definitely works better in darker colors where there is less contrast. On the inside Buy Marc Jacobs Dresses, a fully configurable LCD instrument cluster allows different drivers to select the gauges they want to see. Overall the design team appears to have created a car that while certainly more mainstream than the concept, is still recognizable as the Volt and something different from the Japanese brand hybrids.
